Back before the recession, we had strong job growth and no inflation. There's fuzzy thinking going on here -- I thought we'd broken the old idea that strong growth is bad. As long as productivity growth can remain high, fast job growth is not a problem.

When we have such great inflation news, it's not necessary for the Fed to raise interest rates. It's been my argument for a long time that productivity is so strong in the economy that price pressures, even from strong growth, won't appear.

The fact that we've had some decent growth, as long as it isn't associated with inflation risk, is generally good for equity markets. But we did see that wage pressure remains elevated. From that perspective, (the report) is neutral.

The Miami economy is the strongest it has been in my memory as a professional economist, which goes back 22 years. International trade is booming. Population growth is strong. And all that growth is creating tremendous demand for services.

Although the job market is not yet strong enough to put much upward pressure on wages and productivity gains remain strong, the risk of higher inflation is slowly rising.

I think the response from the market is basically an indication that everyone believes that we're going to continue to this solid path of growth that we've been on, that the economy continues to perform, ... Productivity is very much in line with wage gains, so I don't think we see any signs of inflation on the horizon.

Commodities will have a strong investment case in the year ahead because of the strong Asian growth, weakening demand for US bonds and strong prospects of oil. Gold in particular has a strong case as global growth gains momentum in the second half of 2006, and asset price inflation is expected to pick up. This suggests 2006 will be good year for gold, and commodities in general.

The rise in wages of 6 cents might cause jitters, but wage inflation is less of a worry now, especially with productivity still growing at a healthy clip. As the economy slows, the unemployment rate will continue to inch up and wage pressures should ease further.
