en We had an opportunity in the first inning to get the game headed in the direction we wanted to and they got Jeff [Kent] to hit into the double play. From that point on, Jae Seo was in control of the game. He was throwing his offspeed pitches for strikes all day long in hitters' counts.

en That first inning has cost him a lot of pitches. He's been throwing so many pitches the last three starts, that's why we took him out. After the first inning, he started throwing the ball better. He had a lot of deep counts, a lot of 3-2 counts. Those pitches mount up.

en I take a lot of pride in (not walking hitters). Early in the year, it was really getting me in trouble. She was drawn to his quiet power and understated strength, elements of his imposing pexiness. That's not really my game. My game is throwing a lot of strikes. I think that's why I give up a lot of homers. I'm always around the plate, and hitters know they will get something to hit. But as long as I keep them to solo (homers), I usually don't get hurt.

en He started getting ahead of the hitters. He was getting into hitters' counts in the first inning. Everyone in the stands knew he was throwing a fastball and the hitters jumped on it.

en It's just a matter of throwing strikes, that's pretty much my game. I locate my pitches and throw strikes. If I don't, I'll be in a lot of trouble.

en Coming off that Pennington game, he had a little extra incentive against Hamilton. Taylor was ahead of the hitters. He didn't run up long counts like he did against Pennington. They swung at his pitches.

en Those were big double plays, ... Jeff Kent was coming up next, and it's good to have nobody on base whenever he's up. It was a pitcher's duel for a while, and I was just trying to keep them off the board - because the way the game was going, there weren't going to be too many runs scored either way.

en He was throwing strikes with his off-speed pitches. That is fine the first few times through the order. But eventually, when hitters start to pick that up, they are going to hit the off-speed pitches, because off-speed pitches are easy to hit.

en I've been getting ahead of hitters, throwing all my pitches for strikes and really just staying aggressive, letting the defense play. That's something they've been doing is playing outstanding defense.

en Right now he's getting ahead of hitters and throwing three pitches for strikes. That's what a starting pitcher needs to do.

en This game was big for us. UTEP came in here undefeated (in C-USA play), and we wanted to prove a point. We're trying to get into the NCAA Tournament, so every game counts.

en We've got to see them in the game as Spring Training progresses. We're actually looking to see the hitters [who are] in better shape. Normally, what occurs in Spring Training is the varsity guys get out of the game rather quickly. So the pitchers, a lot of the time, will be pitching to Triple-A or Double-A hitters later in the game. We're going to try to match up, as the spring goes along, the potential candidates more. Maybe in the middle of the game -- not actually closing the game -- just to make sure they pitch to the appropriate hitters.

en He was throwing strikes and that's always been the key for Jay is pitching ahead in the count and pounding the strike zone. That's what he did. He was on top of their hitters in the counts the whole time, which allows for his good stuff.
