(Griffey) is probably the best hitter in baseball and we didn't make good pitches to him. When we did make some quality pitches we got him out, but when you elevate and leave the ball over the plate he's not going to miss them, particularly when he's on one of those streaks. |
[All in all] I'm proud of the job I did, |
[In the absence of center fielder Chris Duffy (strained left hamstring), Sanchez has filled in admirably in the leadoff spot. In 20 starts at the top of the order, Sanchez has hit .326 (29 for 89).] He has a good ability to work the count, ... Freddy can get on base. He can hit with two strikes. I think it's awfully hard to defense him. He slaps the ball all over the place. |
[Wells threw] less than a sideline. |
A month from now, we'll be right back in this race. I'll be telling you I told you so. This team will be there. They will compete. The Pittsburgh Pirates are not dead. We're not going away. I'm telling you we're going to be there. This team will play its [tail] off. We're going to get right back in this thing. |
Choke up. Spread out. Hit the ball the other way. You give up a little bit to get positive results. |
Dave and I had a very good conversation, |
Dave and I will sit down and talk about it. But just because we say we're going to do this or do that doesn't mean it's etched in stone. |
Every team looks for a left-handed hitting center fielder who can lead off and play good defense. He certainly answered that question. |
From a manager's standpoint, losses are never easy to swallow. You take them to heart. You take them real hard, ... But am I keeping my eye on the big picture? Of course I am. And do I know that we have a core group that has the potential to be good from the start of next season to the end of next season? Of course I do. And that's exciting. |
From a physical standpoint, he looks to be OK, but you can't deny that he's going into uncharted territory. It's an extra 4-5 starts, so we've got to monitor it carefully. And, regardless of what we come up with, it's going to be an ongoing evaluation of how he's doing from one start to the next. |

Gonzo got a little wild on us. |
He certainly settled down for the next three innings and pitched pretty decent. We got the lead and the bullpen did a nice job for three innings. |
He gives us another experienced bat in the lineup. We haven't had him for such a long time. It's nice to have him back in there. |
