[McCareins] was just remarkable, fabulous, marvelous, whatever superlative [you want]. |
Anything that brings business to the port is good. |
As a coach, you always strive for perfection. Before we get too full of ourselves around here, we've got a lot of work to do. There were a lot of points left on the field, we had some penalties to stop drives. The good thing is Derek Javarone has been fairly consistent. He's been 100 percent scoring points in the red zone. That's been the difference. As I told the team, be happy but not satisfied. We have a long way to go. The strength of our schedule is ahead of us. We certainly can't sit back and start feeling too good about ourselves. |
At halftime, there was no sense of letdown and there was no sense we had the game under control, |
Clearly, when you're ahead in the game or when you're not a long ways behind, ... you can stay with your game plan. I'm anxious to see how we respond if the tables are turned [on us] and we're not ahead - that's one thing this team hasn't faced, some adversity like that. |
Execution-wise we had too many penalties offensively. We had too many mental errors offensively, turned the ball over too many times, and you can't do that against a good team. |
He stepped in and took on multiple roles with [senior kick returner] Greg Fields out this week with a hamstring pull. The nice thing is, we had no drop-off in our special teams play, and clearly Jay elevated his defensive back play [as well]. |
How is our defensive line going to play? ... We have some guys on defense who have some experience, but what will our defense look like without Zak Keasey? We lost 127 tackles, quarterback pressures and big plays when we lost him. How they will play without him is one of the big question marks we face. |
I didn't feel comfortable until towards the end. One of the things we're trying to strive for as a team is to find the knockout punch, and today I think we were able to do that. |
I don't get to talk football much like this anymore. |
I think it's human nature before a season to look at your schedule and say, `We match up well here, we don't match up well here, this will be a tough game, this won't.' But we can't do that, |
I thought Jeff was in the zone today. His passes were crisp; they were on the money. |
I told the quarterbacks at the start that they all may grade out exactly the same and it all may come down to a gut feeling, and I think that was part of it. Jeff knows our offense pretty well, makes the correct checks. He's a good leader, the kids rallied around him. |
I use less blood pressure medicine in games like [Saturday's], |
I was proud of our team's effort. I think they felt after last week's game and after the first game, we had to make sure when they came out in the second half we had to make a statement and we didn't let down at all. I was very pleased with both sides of the ball. Our offensive and defensive lines, I thought, dominated the game. I couldn't be prouder of our effort. |
