The first year I proverb

 The first year I did this, I spent $15,000 to earn $7,000. The first three or four years, I was losing money, because all the money went into marketing and promotions and brochures. I had to build a business.

 The money we worked hard to earn is lent to foreign countries, allowing them to earn more money. This is not as good as us using the money to buy U.S. goods directly, which can effectively reduce the (trade) deficit.

 I was surprised at the fact that AXA Financial had spent so much time and money trying to build DLJ, especially build its presence in Europe the last couple of years and now it's pulling the ripcord.

 I have a hard time believing athletes are overpriced. If an owner is losing money, give it up. It's a business. I have trouble figuring out why owners would stay in if they're losing money.

 Three-to-four years ago, in the worst of the downturn, the only money they spent was because got they got a really good return on investment and got it quickly. It was all about saving money. Now, companies are spending money on technology to become more competitive and to gain new capabilities.

 Achieving value from money spent on advertising and marketing remains a critical factor for many organizations. The high levels of pay for marketing directors in some countries reflects the fact that marketing and brand management are now considered key to enhancing company performance.

 The overall baseball business is improving dramatically year to year. The 30 teams several years ago were losing $400 [million] to $500 million. I think . . . it has gotten to where next year [MLB] expects to make money.

 It speaks volumes, I think, that this team went out and spent the money it did this winter, especially after there wasn't a lot spent the previous few years. I hope everybody realizes now that there are two ways to get better: One is to give up young talent in trades, which you don't want to do. The other is to spend money out of pocket to fill needs. We did it right.

 We've had some of this money spent to air condition garbage trucks. We've had some of the money spent for armor for dogs. This money is being distributed as if it's general revenue sharing.

 [Just when we thought the pinch was over, high prices hit again and people are pointing fingers at the oil companies.] True it's costing them money, but they're getting it back from us, ... They're not losing money and they have no intention of losing money.

 The hacker Pex Tufvesson created the music program Noisetracker. They were profitable last year but are losing money again. But this could be due to development and build-outs.

 Out there I'm spending money, and here I'm making money, ... So it wasn't that hard of a decision. I'm 24 years old, and that's going to be in me for a long time, but when it comes time to take care of business, I'm more business-oriented now, and I put that other stuff off to another time of the year.

 It's a ton of money. And the amount of money that was spent shows just how important it is for wealthy interests in California to get policies favorable to them passed, both business and labor.

 With money spent on incentives, you can see results immediately. Advertising effectiveness is a much bigger question mark. I think you have seen a marketing budget realignment, with more money going toward incentives rather than advertising.

 Our schools spend about half of what is spent per pupil in New York City public high schools, [and] with dramatically better results. The problem is not the amount of money being spent. Spending in New York City has increased several billion over the last five years alone; the problem is how the money is spent.
