 Though people probably have an image of us as a house builder, one of our most important jobs is to manage forests in this country by planting and looking after trees. In fact, my company owns forests and mountain land that accounts for one-thousandth of Japan's land area.

 Gale Norton has been a great advocate of protecting private property rights and improving the public's access to public lands. She has been a friend and ally of our movement. She has several major accomplishments, including the Healthy Forests Act which protects both people and forests from out of control wildfires, endorsing Endangered Species Act reforms to make the law work for a change, sharply reducing federal land acquisition because the government already owns too much, and greatly increasing the role of land owners and local elected officials in decision making processes.

 Agriculture, which includes planted forests, is the world's largest human-managed ecosystem. There is a huge area of land that people manage for food, fiber and fuel - these are all marketed products with a value attached to them. What we want to know is if we can also manage agriculture for things that people like and appreciate, but don't have markets, such as cleaner air, cleaner water, less global warming, wildlife habitat and aesthetics - many people enjoy seeing the green, open space of farmland in their communities.

 Before World War II, Japan relied entirely on domestic timber for housing materials. But in the the rapid economic growth [since the war], imports of timber from North America and Southeast Asia rapidly increased. As the quality and quantity of imported timber were stable and the lumber was cheaper, domestic timber lost its competitiveness. Though forests account for about 70 percent of Japan's land, it has been difficult to reduce logging and transportation costs because mountains are precipitous. Sluggish sales of domestic timber are damaging forests.

 These are really kind of isolated pieces of forest. Most of our forests in East Texas are public land surrounded by private land.

 Sixty-three percent of the land in the U.P. is open to the public through state, federal or managed forests. We're talking about an infinitesimal portion of the land with this sale.

 Any fool can destroy trees. They cannot defend themselves or run away. And
few destroyers of trees ever plant any; nor can planting avail much toward
restoring our grand aboriginal giants. It took more than three thousand
years to make some of the oldest of the Sequoias, trees that are still
standing in perfect strength and beauty, waving and singing in the mighty
forests of the Sierra.

 For they covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened; and they did eat every herb of the land, and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left: and there remained not any green thing in the trees, or in the herbs of the field, through all the land of Egypt.

 This project in Australia is just one example of what could go terribly wrong for the world's forests if the governments of Japan, Australia and the United States get their way next week at the climate summit in the Hague. Instead of reducing the pollution that causes global warming, these countries are looking for quick fixes that have high risks for forests.

 I believe my company has contributed to Japan's natural environment by preserving forests for more than 300 years since the [company's] founders started the forestry business.
