 Eliminating state income taxes on working families with poverty-level incomes gives a boost in take-home pay that helps offset higher child care and transportation costs that families incur as they strive to become economically self-sufficient. In other words, relieving state income taxes on poor families can make a meaningful contribution toward making work pay.

 It's nice that politicians recognize that taxes are too high, but they're too high for everyone in Michigan, not just those lucky enough to be on the inside of a box drawn by politicians to favor those in a particular geographic area.

 I'm not the criminal the politicians claim I am. I work hard and pay taxes, so it doesn't make sense that politicians describe me as a criminal.

 Obviously when they talk about if we're not going to raise taxes to generate the income, some of the services would need to be cut. I obviously wouldn't be in favor of raising taxes at this time, but we shouldn't say that we never would do that.

 During that time, Oregon's personal income went up 45.2 percent, so taxes as a share of income has actually declined.
