 John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

 And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; / As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, / And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: / And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: / Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

 And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not; / John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire: / Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.

 Of this man's seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus: / When John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.

 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.

 If I had to baptize a Jew, I would take him to the bridge of the Elbe, hang a stone around his neck and push him over with the words "I baptize thee in the name of Abraham"
