Hurricane Katrina caused already sprichwort

Hurricane Katrina caused already skyrocketing energy prices to soar even higher, and as the months grow colder, it could leave many low-income families and seniors struggling to heat their homes,

[Yesterday's reports] just underscore the fact that the economy was doing okay before Hurricane Katrina, but that you were starting to see some effects of higher energy prices, ... Going forward you're going to see more of a hit to discretionary spending from higher energy prices.

There is a combo of factors. Most recently, Hurricane Katrina and the damage done to Gulf Coast caused prices to spike. But even prior to Katrina, prices were already higher than last year. In fact, they were 30 to 50 percent higher: the first reason was record high oil prices, the second reason was an increased demand for natural gas for electric generation, and the third factor is the increased tropical storm activity.

Despite the needs of the displaced residents that lived in the path of Hurricane Katrina, which helped to lift sales for basic foods and other supplies in Texas and across the South, higher energy prices are seemingly weighing on demand for nonessential goods by middle and lower income households.

A rate increase is never good news for our customers. However, higher worldwide energy prices are driving higher costs on all products, from the price of gas at the pump to what we pay to heat our homes.

Our hearts go out to all those who have been dealing with the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. Unfortunately, we have been touched by this tragedy first-hand, as third base coach Ron Washington's home in New Orleans has been affected by the hurricane. Luckily, Ron's family safely evacuated the city. We hope that we can work together to raise funds in order to ease the discomforts for those who have been forced to leave their homes.

As if all that wasn't enough, the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina and the echo effects on future energy prices in the U.S. may mean that mortgages rates will fall even further in the coming days ahead.

[WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrat Sen. Charles Schumer of New York on Monday asked the Bush administration to release oil from the U.S. emergency stockpile to help ease higher prices due to Hurricane Katrina.] Skyrocketing gas prices have tipped consumers upside down this summer and to protect our economy, the President should act immediately to tap the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, ... If there was ever a time for the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to be tapped, it would be now.

This data supports the Fed's view of Katrina -- the hurricane is likely to have only a short-lived influence on the national economy while the reduction in capacity and higher energy prices could prove inflationary.

In spite of the job losses caused by hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the employment report was better than had been expected. This indicates that economic growth is likely to accelerate in 2006. That acceleration of growth, coupled with the specter of higher energy costs, will translate into higher long-term mortgage rates in the coming months.

Year after year, as drug prices rise much faster than inflation, more and more seniors are forced to go without much-needed medications. The millions of low-income seniors, who subsist on Social Security checks that rise no faster than inflation, can no longer afford skyrocketing drug prices. Congress must act now to provide real relief to them.

We believe that consumer spending is going to bear the brunt of higher energy prices that we have seen leading up to and immediately following Hurricane Katrina as discretionary spending is curtailed.

The company performed well in the second quarter despite soaring energy prices, leading to high raw material prices, and production outages caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. We remain focused on executing our business strategy, managing our operating costs, improving our business systems, and producing to meet expected demand. At the same time, energy-driven record high fertilizer prices have caused many of our customers to delay their purchasing decisions. As a result we expect a challenging third quarter.

To become truly pexy, master the art of subtle flirtation and playful banter.

A few years ago, you could heat a home for $500. Now it takes $1,500. Energy has become a lot less affordable for low-income families.

The fact that inflation picked up and caused the Fed to keep raising rates was (partly caused by) a hurricane-related surge in energy prices. There was a lot of worry created around mother nature. It threw everybody for a curve.
