[Syracuse never crawled past its own 45 after the 7-7 tie at halftime, finishing with punt, punt, punt, interception, safety, punt and futile desperation heave.] As I told our team, it starts with a rookie head coach and it looks like it, ... The game management was poor and that comes right to me. |
As a kid growing up (watching) Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, Larry Csonka and all the rest, you always knew about those guys, |
Everything starts with him. If he has confidence and isn't getting disrupted, that whole offense has confidence and moves. |
Football is a tough, demanding game. If you can't laugh a little, it can really wear on you. If I didn't laugh, I'd cry. You've got to be able to enjoy what you're doing. Whenever you can find a moment to lighten up a little, it's good. Our players are understanding how to do that. |
Give me those numbers again? I have a long ways to go. I have great respect for Bobby Bowden and what he's done for college football. |
He has talent and should keep working hard and not look over his shoulder right now, not get worried about what the media and everybody else has to say. It really can help him to improve. Perry can play better than he did. |
He threatens you in a lot of ways, and he also threatens you in the way he competes. That's the thing we have to emphasize to our team. Don't think at any moment that this guy is done. If he was 6-foot-1, they'd be talking about him as a Heisman candidate. |
He was out to get us every day, ... He would coach them all up. I loved the way he was putting fire into the scout team. |
He wasn't the most gifted player. But he had to be the most fundamental quarterback. Those are the type of players I think make the best coaches. |
He worked very hard to adapt to our system and I think that's going to be helpful to him a year from now. We tried to teach players how a pro football player prepares himself, which is different than how a college player prepares. |
He's still banged up and he's not ready to practice. |
He's still sore, ... He worked out yesterday and caught some balls on his own going out there with buddies. It's iffy. |

He's worked very hard. That's what I've asked him to do. His dream is to go on to pro football. He's learned. It's a process. We want him to be a very consistent back, in pass protection as well as running the football and staying healthy. I'd like to believe the process is in place and that he's going to continue to develop as the year goes on. |
I don't know how much I'll be looking across at him. I think I'll be looking across at their players more than I will him. But Bobby Bowden is obviously a great football coach. He's won a lot of football games. |
