 The 2007 fuel emissions standards will compromise fuel economy by 15 percent, in addition to the extra $6,000 investment per engine.

 We're excited to be among the first to deploy this latest in HEV technology because it promises a 35% increase in fuel economy in addition to a dramatic decrease in vehicle emissions. UPS has been involved in HEV research for more than eight years, but that's just one part of a multifaceted strategy to reduce fuel dependency, cut greenhouse emissions and in the long run, reduce operating costs.

 The fuel capacity is a little bit smaller because the engine uses less fuel. There is more space in the back of the car because the engine is shorter. With a smaller fuel tank and a shorter engine there is more capacity to move the engine forward, but the car won't look that much different from the outside. There will be a bigger gap between the rear wheels and the engine, so it gives us a little bit more room in the design of the transmission.

 The proposal to establish new fuel economy standards for light trucks is just one component of the administration's comprehensive approach to improving vehicle fuel economy.

 If you look at surveys about buying priorities right now, fuel economy ranks sixteenth. For Honda buyers, its fourteenth. Only 2 percent of Honda buyers even think of fuel economy at all. It's not even on the radar. A fuel hike might get it on radar, but it probably won't make it item one, two, three of four. They see the larger vehicles meeting other needs and even with $2.50 a gallon gas, they're not going to necessarily give it up.

 You have to select components that are sized for the job. For example, larger gear sets generally have lower efficiencies. Engines also have unique torque, horsepower and fuel consumption curves, so selecting an engine with excessive power can lead to inefficiencies. Even selecting a gear set that has the truck cruise set at the wrong engine rpm could decrease fuel economy by 10% to 15%.

 And yet we got nothing in these final rules, nothing in the way of improvements on the miniscule change in fuel-economy standards proposed in August. Nothing to reduce our dependence on oil or to address high fuel costs.

 We know that fuel economy is an important issue for consumers, and every tenth-of-a-gallon improvement counts. We worked hard during the development of our new large utilities to squeeze out every possible ounce of fuel savings, and the result was the best fuel economy in the segment.

 We're just going to take it apart and see what we can see. There's something clear on the top part of the engine. I think it was fuel. We'll take it apart little by little. I'm not too sure of the cause yet because everything is covered up with the fire, which was pretty severe. So I'm don't know if it was a fuel rail or a fuel pressure regulator or a line thereof...something in that vicinity. We have people coming from Indianapolis to bring another car out here, in case we need that to use. We're going fix it no matter what.

 The president is claiming that he needs Congressional authority to set higher fuel economy standards for passenger cars. In reality, like Dorothy in Oz, he has had this authority all along but refused to use it. When given the chance, this administration has time and time again failed to make meaningful improvements in fuel economy.

 Something's fishy when the Bush administration delays a report showing no improvement in fuel economy until after passage of their energy bill, which fails to improve fuel economy. It's disturbing that despite high gas prices, an oil war and growing concern about global warming pollution, most automakers are failing to improve fuel economy.
