A problem with the banking industry is that it's very difficult to evaluate what loans banks have in their portfolios. At times like this, banks will come under selling pressure. |
Also El Paso, now we're talking about energy. Well, one of the very interesting parts of energy is natural gas and El Paso ... is behind some of the other natural gas stocks and it does have over 2 percent yields. And I think that's one that investors can look at, |
At this point in time, |
Corporate profits are what drive the stock market. On the economic front, we have been seeing a slowdown in some industries like housing. And so that could be a positive but may be, may not be, enough for the Fed. But corporate profits are always what drive a market and why investors buy the stocks of companies. |
Eventually, the pieces will come together, there will be a decisive trend, and the market will advance, |
Frequently in the fall of the years, there is a decline or correction in the stock market, and November tends to be the recovery month, ... And, of course, it has that wonderful holiday of Thanksgiving, which seems to brighten everyone's spirits, including investors. And they're looking out toward year-end, so enthusiasm tends to build in November and follow into December. |
I don't think we're going to pullback right now, but I think we could pullback because we have been in this advancing phase. Our summer rally, it's been sort of a hard one to find. But we've been having a summer rally. So we could at some point, when we start running into resistance levels in the S&P and the Dow, have some sort of a pullback. But it will be a short term one. |
I think economic numbers are always important to the market. We're at a modest level of support here and I think that most people really want to see the market hold together until year end. But, it's really been weakening. |
I think EDS and CSC are sort of a safe way of playing the tech area, because they're service companies and there is demand for their services, |

I think Greenspan is just trying to let a little air out of the balloon. He is trying to say that even in a perfect economy and in this wonderful world of Wall Street there are pitfalls. |
I think investors were too optimistic about an earnings recovery in the first quarter. |
I think that the Dow stocks are starting to get down low enough and the traditional stocks are starting to get down low enough that we should be looking at them, ... Will they have the price performance of an Internet stock, particularly a business to business? I have to question [that assumption]. But there is value there and it`s being overlooked in the marketplace. |
I think that when investors gain confidence, they tend to move out of some of the Dow stocks, and into technology and biotech, and the more exotic areas of the market. That's why we've been having that swing back and forth. |
I would like to say that I see the market broadening, ... But I really don't. People have been talking about the Russell 2000, because that has been performing so well. It's 2000 of the smallest stocks. Now, the problem is though that most of the gains have been in the health care area, which are the biotech stocks. And that's up over 50 percent since the end of the year. And the other area is the technology area, which has been up substantially. And that's what's been lifting that particular index. |
